Retro MIDI Christmas Music: Why Old Web Carols Sound So Nostalgic
Why MIDI Christmas music became the soundtrack of 1990s and early-2000s homepages, and how to recreate the feeling without autoplay misery.
On dial-up, a full audio recording was expensive. A MIDI file could be tiny because it mostly described which notes and instruments a computer should play. The visitor's own sound hardware supplied the performance.
That limitation created an accidental aesthetic: bright piano, synthetic bells, choir pads and arrangements that sounded slightly different on every machine.
Recreating it today
Use your own MIDI files or licensed/public-domain arrangements, render them with a deliberately simple General MIDI sound set, and give visitors a clear play/pause control. Nostalgia is better when it respects the mute button.
